Devon, Charles letter to unnamed woman ("Madam"), February 4, 1840

 File — Box: 1
Identifier: id39842

Scope and Contents

One letter from Charles Devon to an unnamed female correspondent, addressed "Dear Madam" and dated February 4, 1840. Devon sends books and an autograph of Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, to be given to the recipient's daughter "Miss Lawes."

Charles Devon, Esq. of 36 Queen Square, Bloomsbury, London was engaged in editing and publishing various documents of historical interest, and it seems likely that some of these were the books sent with this letter: he writes "In presenting these volumes I do not wish to impose the painful infliction of requiring the perusal of the whole, they are intended only as books of reference and helps to history; if however you will indulge me with a careful examination of the prefaces you will be put in full possession of the nature and object, of the work, without much trouble; though many of the entries are extremely curious & illustrative of English history."

The recipient, likely a Mrs. Lawes given the name of her daughter mentioned in the letter, cannot yet be identified with certainty.
