Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The first of Mae’s diaries begins in 1901, a year after her father passed away. Her diaries from 1901, 1903 and 1904 record her daily life as a single woman and her courtship with Elmer. She records the weather daily, housework, visiting with family and friends, and attending church and social events. The remaining diaries, for 1914, 1916, and 1917, journal her life as a wife and mother with entries about the weather, household chores, sewing, farm work, and visits to friends' homes. Mae’s friendship album spans from 1897 through 1920. The title page states it is a Poets Album and contains illustrations with the first lines of poems by famous authors, such as ''Maid of Atherns, Ere We Part'' by Lord Byron. The album contains verses or notes written by her friends. The bulk of content in the album dates from 1901 through 1904. Elmer’s album is from 1892 through 1920 with the majority of the content from 1892 to 1902. It features a family tree and entries from friends and family members.
