Scope and Contents

Account book of Orrin D. Seward (1798 - 1857), with later additions. Accounts run from June 1838 through April 1862, and include payments to Seward for sawing wood and other carpentry-related tasks, including framing houses, constructing coffins, repairing wagons and sleighs, etc. Credits are also given, and range widely from plowing to labor to household goods. Entries written after Orrin Seward's death may have been written by his widow or one of his sons.

Following the account entries are recipes for "Tanning Firs [Furs] and other Skins" and "Washing Fluid," and the volume ends with a short memorandum by Orrin Seward in which he notes important events and gives his tax valuations for 1847 through 1858, with additions giving tax valuations from 1862 through 1875. Events noted by Seward include removal from Lebanon, Madison County to Colesville, Broome County on September 3, 1835; construction of a new house in 1841; "rebuilt my saw mill and set it to running" in January 1843; construction of a new barn in 1844, and construction of a new saw mill in 1847.
