Souvenir of the Lyceum "Faust", 1887-1894
Scope and Contents
Souvenir book for Sir Henry Irving's Broadway engagement and American tour of W.G. Wills's Faust, adapted from Goethe; known as "the Lyceum Faust" for the Irving's London Theatre, where he premiered and performed the piece. Irving portrayed Mephistopheles, while Ellen Terry performed Margaret; the title role was played by George Alexander (the original Valentine, who succeeded H.B. Conway as Faust). Profusely illustrated by W. Telbin, W.H. Margetson, Hawes Craven, J. Bernard Partridge, and Helen H. Hatton. Published in London by J.S. Virtue and Co., Ltd.
Two copies: Copy #1 - First page signed "F.J.Nettlefold. Jan. 21st 1887," title page indicates that this is "twenty-fourth thousand." Stamp on last page indicates that this was part of the SUNY Binghamton Theater Collection; Copy #2 - "A.S.Jackson" written in upper right corner of cover, "New Edition. 30th Thousand. Pictures of the Witches Kitchen" stamped on front cover, title page indicates that this is "Thirtieth Thousand.-Reprinted from the Art Journal."
Tucked into Copy #2 was a clipping from The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, April 28, 1894 titled "Dress at the Lyceum."
