Scope and Contents
Jacob Shappee's diary for 1881, with daily entries. Written in the "Excelsior Daily Journal for 1881" ("Published Annually for the Trade). Diary entries are followed by a page of Memoranda, Cash Accounts for each month and Bills Payable/Receivable, which cover January through May.
On the Bills Payable page for November, Shappee has written a list of the Standing Committees of the [Elmira] Common Council for 1883, and there are two recipes written on the Bills Payable page for December: one for a cure for Smallpox/Scarlet, the other for Hop Bitters.
The name "Mr. Geo. L. Benham," of Reading Centre, NY is written on the recto of the rear free endpaper; on the verso are the names "Miss Maggie Spearman" and "L[?]. B. Shappee," with the address 173 State St., Rochester, NY.
