Georgia F. Farnham to Grace D. Nichols, August 17, 1864

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 1

Scope and Contents

Written from Exeter, New Hampshire. Describes her travels from Rockland to Exeter with Laura (perhaps a friend or relative). At Exeter they were met by Mary, Georgia's sister, who had married John Conner of Exeter. Georgia goes on to describe various visits and acquaintances, including the Swasey family (Hannah and her brothers Eben and Ambrose, and their cousin Joe Byron of Cambridge, Massachusetts); Susie Nourse of Andover, Massachusetts; ... She reports that they had attended a lecture on spiritualism by a Mrs. Pike, but "got disgusted before it was done and left. I never want to hear a woman lecture again on that subject." She describes social interactions and games, makes much fun of Mr. Byron and his bows, and complains of lameness after a bumpy ride. She asks Grace to give love "to all the girls Clara especially" and sends regards to Grace's mother. Susie has added a note at the foot of the page, "Yours in the greatest tribulation, Susie" and Laura has added a cross-written note on the verso of the final page, repeating some of Georgia's news, asking her to tell Clara to write and noting that if she were acquainted with Grace's mother, she would send love. Envelope postmarked at Exeter, August 18, 1864, addressed to "Miss Grace D. Nichols, Care of A. J. Bird, Rockland, Maine."
