Georgia F. Farnham to Grace D. Nichols, August 16, 1865
Scope and Contents
Written from Exeter, New Hampshire. Writes about a letter she had received from "Bro. Geo.", who called himself "Miss Laura Rhoade's favorite coz." She said she did not plan to answer his letter. She sympathizes with Grace for not having heard anything from "your beloved Harry" and reports that she has heard nothing from Edward Everett [Kent] since being in Exeter. She laments that she seems unlikely to marry in the near future. She writes "Grace, I am astonished, I am surprised, I am shocked, to hear that you can countenance a rebel, even if he be your own flesh and blood. Why, what is the world, and Grace Nichols, in particular, coming to, when such men are allowed all the privileges of civilized society and are treated with as much politeness as northern soldiers? This rebel, being your cousin, and bearing a strong resemblance to your old charmer, Mr. Prickard, I suppose you think you have an undisputed right in entertaining, and think it is nobody's business that you do so. Well, I don't know as it is, but I couldn't help speaking my mind on the subject. I can't see why you think I can have a good opinion of the creature. His disloyalty would forever lower him in my eyes." [This seems to be Grace's correspondent Robert Rankin]. She mentions several girls having been visited by their correspondents and describes how she fears she would have reacted if she had been in the situation. She asks Grace to give regards to Rhoda Sprague, and describes a visit with Tom Conner in which he persuaded her to try some of his homemade snuff. She describes a visit from her friends the Miss Leffords, at which she read them her letters from "E. E. Kent" and told them about Grace's "Jimmy Lemon" [the pseudonym used by Henry McCahill]. She asks if Grace can come to Exeter and visit, and mentions attending a missionary lecture and going to pick huckleberries. Envelope postmarked at Exeter, August 18, 1865, addressed to "Miss Grace D. Nichols, Rockland, Maine."
