Georgia F. Farnham to Grace D. Nichols, September 6, 1865
Scope and Contents
Written from Exeter, New Hampshire. Notes that the weather has been hot and now rainy, and asks if Grace enjoyed her visit to Rockville, noting "I suppose you did, for you were near your beloved Stephen." She asks how he looked and what has become of his brother Sydney [these are perhaps Stephen and Sydney Gurney, listed in the 1860 census at Camden, Maine]. She laments that Clara has not written to her, or the "Hewett girls." She notes that Grace has heard from "Harry" and calls her fortunate, noting that she has not heard from "E.E.K." but about him from Delle Alford, who said that he had wanted her to invite Georgia to Portsmouth Grove and that he would have taken them to visit Newport, but she had not done so until after his departure. "Now, wouldn't I have felt gay, travelling to fashionable Newport with a good looking soldier? It would have been as good as sitting in a hogshead of molasses eating sugar plums." Mary encourages Grace to visit them in Exeter; Georgia notes that she feels sick and does not want to go anywhere. She resumes their conversation about Grace's cousin: "I think your 'Rebel cousin' must be a very fascinating individual, if all you say of him be true," and asks why Grace thinks it strange that Mr. Prickard should write to her: "Hasn't he been in the habit of writing to you occasionally ever since he has been in the Army?" She writes that the Academy has begun its term and has more than 400 students, and that a wealthy donor has provided for a female high school. Envelope postmarked at Exeter, September 6, 1865, addressed to "Miss Grace D. Nichols, Rockland, Maine."
