Henry P. McCahill to Grace D. Nichols, June 16, 1865
Scope and Contents
Written from the Camp of the 182nd New York Regiment. Opens "Dear Cousin." Notes the receipt of her letter of June 11, 1865 and writes that he would write nearly every day if she could answer as quickly. He deplores the missing letters "on account of your long looked for photograph being enclosed in one" and asks her to send another copy. He notes the importance of her studying and offers to take on half of her lessons and that he would have enjoyed attending a series of lectures she had been to. He notes an upcoming "Corps Review" which he must attend. In a postscript he writes "Happening to look over your postscript I can only say that your feelings are reciprocated but I only wish we would be something nearer than cousins but who knows what would turn up so I will wait and as the song says 'Trust to Luck.'" He closes with a second postscript asking her to send a photo.
