Henry P. McCahill to Grace D. Nichols, July 7, 1865

 Item — Box: 1, Folder: 30

Scope and Contents

Written from the Camp of the 182nd New York Regiment. Opens "Dear Cousin." Notes the receipt of her letter dated July 1, 1865, and reports that he had written a letter "going to give you 'fits' but I guess I won't send it. You want to know if I want your picture. Oh! gracious what a little torment you are. Do I want it - Well I guess I do." He continues asking about the hair, writing "but if you pictured me before your imagination as you state I am very sorry to inform you are wrong." He adds a "little description of myself. To begin, I am 19 years of age (that is I will be shortly) Blue eyes, Light brown hair and I flatter myself that I am not very bad looking." He expects to be home within about a week and will send a photo. He says that he will follow her advice and burn her letters immediately, and that he has purchased a frame for her likeness and has had a watch chain made out of her hair. The letter is accompanied by a calligraphic calling card with the name "Henry McCahill."
