John Porcius Gage to Grace D. Nichols, April 22, 1866
Scope and Contents
Written from Carversville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Dated "April Sunday" but without a year. From the other correspondence this seems likely to be 1866, and most likely April 22. Notes that her letter to him had come via Vineland, New Jersey. Notes that he received a letter at the same time from a school friend living in the Bahamas. He had left two weeks before to attend school, and says that the students "have got so much dutch blood in their veins that they do not know how white folks act." He describes social gatherings at the school and says he "must go & try & find some flowers to send Cousin Grace. Why did I sign myself your cousin I don't know why unless I just happend to hear [circled in curlicues] think it. You will see the word hear well the reason I wrote that was because some of the boys were talking so loud that I heard them above my thoughts." He reports that he has got the flowers to send to her, and writes "I wish you would tell me what it was you alluded to in your letter that concerns you & myself please tell me wont you." He reports that they "have some fun talking with the copperhead boys here there is two who have a good deal to say & I think they have a hard row to hoe & there are others who have some copper in them that have good sense enough to keep still." He reports that he doesn't know what to think about Celia and E.: "I should hardly think she would want to marry him but as you say if she loves him then I should think she would." Envelope postmarked at Carversville, April 23. Addressed to "Miss Grace D. Nichols, Rockland, Maine." Enclosed envelope of dried flowers is labeled "From J. P. Gage, Vineland, New Jersey."
