John Porcius Gage to Grace D. Nichols, October 22, 1865
Scope and Contents
Written from Lambertville, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Opens "My Dear Friend Grace Darling." Notes the receipt of her letter of October 1, 1865 and apologizes for the delay in answering. Describes a visit to Vineland where he attended a dance, visited some girls working on curtains for a "dramatic exhibition," which was to fund a bell for the Presbyterian church. He did not see Celia but heard that "Mr. H." was back. He asks about the picture she sent, and again offers to send a new one if she returns the old one. He describes the girls of Lambertville as "the silliest set I ever saw."
