John Porcius Gage to Grace D. Nichols, June 10, 1866
Scope and Contents
Written from Carversville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Opens "My Dear Friend Grace." Describes hot weather and needing summer clothing. Thanks her for a picture she had sent, adding "I think you have changed some since then." He chides her for a prank: "I do think it was not right to get that hair from _____ making that person believe you wanted it yourself and then send it off it is really making fun of the person." He notes that he does not correspond with Lizzie and that he knows nothing of Celia's "cabbin boy only that she got acquainted with him on the boat and that she kept up a correspondence with him for some time ..." Envelope postmarked at Carversville, June 13. Addressed to "Miss Grace D. Nichols, Rockland, Maine."
