Robert Rankin to Grace D. Nichols, August 29, 1865

 Item — Box: 2, Folder: 60

Scope and Contents

Written from Belfast, Maine. Opens "Dear Cousin Gracie Darling Nichols." Reports receipt of her letter of August 26, 1865. He reports that "Deberer Brown" is visiting and expects her to return to Rockland shortly. He had attended a Methodist camp-meeting the previous night with "Cousin Lizzie and Debrer." He has been to have his "phiz" but he did not like it and was planning to go again. He plans to visit Rockland that winter for sleighing. Of those he met in Searsport he says "they were all as homely and home made sin, or as I am, either will do." He resumes "24 hours later," noting that Debrer has gone and has taken his roommate, "Sir Master William Crockett," with her. He asks Grace to report all the stories Debrer tells, and asks how she knew they were corresponding. He suggests she write two letters to him, one in the care of Ben and the other without, and he will tell her which is received first. He says he will not write again until he has a new pen, and signs off "Yours till deth, Robert, or in other words, Truly Yours, Robert."

Envelope postmarked at Belfast, September 3. Addressed to "Miss Grace D. Nichols, Rockland, Maine." Written in pencil on the verso of the envelope: "[?] seem to know more than other folks does she?"
