Scope and Contents

Written from Belfast, Maine. Opens "Sweet Coz." Reports that someone had written him that Grace's mother had read his last letter and "positively forbid your corresponding with me any more. I had serious thoughts of committing 'Susan Side,' if such was realy the case, but your letter has driven all such notions out of my head and I am once more a rational being." He asks if she enjoyed her trip to Rockville acknowledges that her school had recommenced. Describes breaking a new chalk pipe that wouldn't smoke. He had seen Olive Wall from Rockland at the camp-meeting and looked for Grace, without seeing her. He asks if Grace knows "a Johnnie Robbins living in your beautiful city. I am not certain but think he is paying his expresses to Miss Mary Brown. he was aboard of the vessel that I came out on. do you think him handsome? witty? fascinating &c. and do you think he can ever get her to talk? if he does he is smarter than I think he is." [This may be Grace's future husband John T. Robbins]. He signs off "Your Affectionate Coz, Robert," and ask in a postscript "ask Mrs Blake when shall I look for those cigars she promised to send me."

Envelope postmarked at Belfast [date illegible]. Addressed to "Miss Grace D. Nichols, Rockland, Maine."
