Scope and Contents

Written from Charleston, West Virginia. Notes that they are ordered to do no work the following day, "on account of the death, or rather on account of the funeral of our late President which takes place tomorrow." Reports that the Confederate colonel at Lewisburg had come that day with a flag of truce to surrender his forces on the same terms as General Lee, and that he expects they will be allowed the same terms "but I hope not it is letting them off to easy." Asks her to write once a week.

Envelope postmarked at Kanawha, West Virginia, April 20. Addressed to "Mrs. Jane Lockwood, Watkins, Schulyer Co., N.Y."
