Letters, July - September 1945
Scope and Contents
The John Lewis Phillips and Beverly Jean Lyon letters are roughly 150 pieces of correspondence written by Binghamton-area fiances during WWII while John was serving on the USS Blue Ridge.
Letters from John discuss the weather, food, entertainment for the soldiers, holidays, activities on days off, the mail service, his finances, and friends, especially people he meets from the Binghamton area. Because of military censorship, John was unable to discuss his location, details about other soldiers, and military activities. John often discusses his wellbeing and emotional state, including his boredom, thoughts about death, homesickness, and his love for Beverly.
Beverly (going by her middle name, Jean, in the letters) discusses her bank work, gifts she sends to John, her family, mutual school friends, trips to Syracuse and New York City, the couple's future plans, and the weather.
