Veeder, Simon chemical reference notebook and recipe book

 File — Box: 1
Identifier: id40024

Scope and Contents

Blank leatherbound book of 142 numbered pages (some numbered incorrectly), containing chemical names and recipes. Printed book label of Simon Veeder on front pastedown, with motto "Ne Scriptura evanesceret." A later owner has inscribed his name underneath the label: "John J. Vrooman, April 5th, 1920." Recipe notes also written on front pastedown.

The bulk of the material seems to date from the middle decades of the nineteenth century (say 1830 to 1860 or thereabouts).

Contents, with pages given as numbered in the volume:

pp. 1-31: two-column alphabetical list of chemical compounds listed with "Ancient Names" in one column and "New Names" in the second column.

pp. 33-132: headed "A Dictionary of the new Chemical Nomenclature." Two-column alphabetical list of chemical compounds listed with "New Names" in one column and "Ancient Names" in the second column. The new names have been included; the "Ancient Names" column is partially filled in, but blank spaces have been used for a variety of recipes written in various hands, sometimes in blank spaces between and around the chemical names. Most of the recipes are medical, but there are several for household use (rat deterrent), foods, and drinks.

pp. 133-142: headed "Miscellaneous Observations." Notes on tanning leather, medical recipes, the preservation of milk, recipes for various cakes, stain removers, and soap.

Following the bound volume are 16 numbered pages of household, medical, and food recipes, in multiple hands, and other sheet folded to make four pages, the first three of which contain additional recipes.

Laid in at the back are three American Tract Society leaflets: No. 547 ("Just Too Late"); No. 570 ("Living, or Dead?); and No. 575 ("Characters of a Believing Christian"). The second of these has "Simon Veeder's" written on the first page above the title.

The rear pastedown contains the names of various medical books, several partial recipes, and three arithmetical problems.

The spine and the front and rear boards of the volume are decorated in blind with floral rules, forming borders and an "X" on both boards.

This volume was found in the Minard-Dickinson Family papers and removed to this collection after no connection with that family could be found. The specific Simon Veeder whose bookplate is at the front has not yet been identified.
