Scope and Contents

Thirty (30) pen and ink drawings and designs by Jack B. Bryan for publication in the "Binghamton Press" and "Evening Press." Most are on heavy board, many with printing markup including page numbers, measurements, and occasional dates. Most are cartoons, but several feature Bryan's graphical designs for headlines and advertisements. Topics vary widely, but include portraits, football, aging, St. Patrick's Day, and what looks like a plan for electronic transmission of mail.

Accompanied by an insert from the September 12, 1963 issue of the "Evening Press," headlined "Football for '63" and featuring an eight-panel cartoon by Bryan.

Biographical Note

Jack B. Bryan was born in New Philadelphia, Ohio on July 27, 1908. He studied at Western Reserve Univesity in Cleveland and the Cleveland School of Art. From 1942 to 1945 he served as a sergeant in an Army Air Force combat intellgence unit, and also drew cartoons for military publications.

Bryan was sports cartoonist for the "News" of New Castle, PA, and staff artist for the "Herald" of Sharon, PA before joining the "Binghamton Press" as artist and cartoonist. His Sunday comic strip was entitled "Broome Sweepings."

In 1947 he co-founded Shenango Metalcraft of Sharon, PA, a photo-engraving and metal brokerage firm. He was known for engraving portraits on steel: in 1950 the Ford Motor Company purchased fifty of his steel portraits of Henry Ford, which were displayed in Ford factories.

Bryan died suddenly while at work at the "Press" on May 22, 1971.
