Historical Note

The Jackson State College Project was an inter-institutional cooperative project between Jackson State College and Harpur College. It included inter-library exchanges, opportunities for Jackson State graduates and faculty to study at Harpur, joint research and experimental teaching projects between faculty at the two campuses, faculty and student exchanges for special projects. The goal of the project was student success, curricular development, faculty development and institutional studies. The Project recieved a federal grant in 1966.

Jackson State College is an HBCU (Historically Black College or University) based in Jackson, Mississippi. At its core, the project was based on a desire to lift up black students and faculty, and to adress the systemic barriers to academic achievement for these groups. The project became even more linked to civil rights when police killed two and injured 12 protesting students on Jackson State campus in 1970.

The project ended in 1973, likely because of a breakdown in communication between the two schools and a lack of funding.
