Biographical / Historical
The Vice President and Provost of Academic Affairs is the chief academic administrator at Binghamton University. They are responsible for overseeing undergraduate and graduate academic programs, recruiting and retaining faculty, and overseeing assesment of all academic programs. They also play a key role in determining and tracking the budget.
S. Stewart Gordon became the first Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1967. While this date is the official creation of the role, Gordon had served in the similar position of Dean of Harpur College since 1955. In 1965, Harpur College had joined the SUNY system and had become State University of New York at Binghamton. This change neccesitated the creation of the new Vice President for Academic Affairs position.
The following timeline of the Vice President and Provost of Academic Affairs gives approximate dates that individuals held the position. Directories were used to create this timeline, but since directories are only published once per academic year, it is unclear the exact dates individuals joined or left the position. For example, if an individual first appears in a 1979 directory, they could have been appointed in September 1978 and missed the deadline for the 1978 directory printing.
