William S. Chittenden papers
Scope and Contents
A substantial portion of this collection comprises medical and official records from William S. Chittenden's appointment and release from the U.S. Naval Reserve. There are also two certificates from William's son, Thomas S. Chittenden, signifying his time in the United States Army Air Defense. A third folder in this collection contains pieces of correspondence and personal documents from James Alvin Every, whose connection to William and Thomas Chittenden is unclear.

Biographical Note
William Sisson Chittenden was born on May 10, 1908 in Binghamton, Broome County, New York. He was the son of Walter L. Chittenden and Eva S. Chittenden, and the grandson of William Worth Sisson. He was educated at Yale University and the Graduate School of Banking. He was a prominent banker with the City National Bank of Binghamton and eventually served on its board and as Assistant Trust Officer.
Chittenden also served as the treasurer of the Susquenango Council, scoutmaster and Court of Honor member of the Boy Scouts of America, and Assistant Treasurer and Director of the Binghamton Boys' Club. Chittenden married Helen Gitchell of Kew Gardens, N.Y. in 1933. They had two children, Thomas and Eva. Chittenden died in Binghamton on November 20, 1991.
