James Reilly scrapbook on the 1911 New York senatorial election, 1910 - 1959, bulk: 1910 - 1911
Scope and Contents
A large scrapbook of newspaper clippings and printed ephemera pertaining to the 1911 New York senatorial election, in which former lieutentant governor William F. Sheehan was blocked from election by a group of Democratic legislators which included Franklin Delano Roosevelt, then serving in the state senate. According to later correspondence by Sheehan's campaign manager, Ashley Cole, the scrapbook was compiled by James W. Reilly, who had been loaned to Sheehan's campaign as a press agent by his employer, the Buffalo Times. The clippings come from a variety of New York newspapers.
Accompanied by a folder of correspondence from 1959 (with an enclosure dating from 1950) between Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., Cole, and SUNY New Paltz history professor Alfred Rollins, explaining the background and context of the scrapbook.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Donated to Binghamton University Libraries in June 1967 by history professor Alfred Rollins. The scrapbook had been sent to Rollins in April 1959 by Ashley T. Cole, who had acted as campaign manager for William F. Sheehan during the 1911 senatorial election.
