Gibbs, Sgt. Gerald B. letter to Albert Opie family, June 1, 1944
Scope and Contents
Letter from Sgt. Gerald B. "Jerry" Gibbs addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Opie of 20 Lawton Avenue in Binghamton. The letter is headed "India" and the author is necessarily vague about his location, noting that he has been moving frequently over the last two months and has now "left the monsoon country and am now in a hot, dry district" ... near "one of the best airbases in India and is much nicer than most places I have been, over here. The only bad feature is the heat or, if the wind blows too hard, the dust storms." He notes that there are "many English people here - many more than you would expect to see. I can't figure why they live here, I never would from choice." He reports that his location is "very far from danger" and that he does not know how long he will be there, having nearly completed his first year of service.
The accompanying envelope bears a "Passed by Army Examiner" censor's stamp.
